Safety Data Sheet (SDS)

The safety data sheet (SDS) provides legally binding information on the hazards, protective measures and handling of a substance or mixture. In the EU, it follows the REACH/CLP structure with 16 sections (including composition, first aid, firefighting, release measures, storage, exposure protection, disposal, transport and legal provisions). Important for operation and maintenance are: hazard pictograms, H/P statements, occupational exposure limits, personal protective equipment (PPE), storage conditions, media and seal compatibility, and information on accidents and fires.

SDSs must be provided in a timely manner, used in training, and accessible in the workplace. Any changes must be documented. Effective SDS management improves safety, compliance, and selection decisions – for example, when it comes to cleaning agents, cooling lubricants, oils, or greases.
