Concentricity

Concentricity describes how concentrically a rotating part runs in relation to the reference axis – measured as radial runout/concentricity deviation. High accuracy means low vibration, less noise, less tool and bearing wear, and better surface quality. Influencing factors include geometric and manufacturing errors, clamping devices, balance condition, contamination, bearing or shaft play, and assembly quality.

Measurements are taken using a dial gauge, probe or 3D measuring system; tolerances are regulated by drawings and standards. In practice, clean contact surfaces, correct clamping force, proper alignment and suitable storage ensure accurate values. If problems arise, balancing, reworking or component replacement can help. Good concentricity is the basis for precise machining, smooth running and long service life.
