Water-based lubricants contain water as their main component and achieve a lubricating and cooling effect through dissolved/dispersed additives or emulsion components. They dissipate heat well, are often low-flammable and reduce emissions – ideal for machining, forming or as hydraulic or chain lubricants in special applications. Decisive factors are pH control, corrosion protection, bio-stability, foaming behaviour and material compatibility (e.g. aluminium, non-ferrous metals, elastomers).
During operation, chips, foreign oil, water hardness and germs alter the properties; therefore, concentration control, filtration, oil separation and maintenance are required. Limitations arise with very high surface pressures or water sensitivity. When used correctly, water-based products reduce consumption, temperature peaks and fire risk – while maintaining stable quality and good occupational hygiene.
