WERUCON thread-forming lubrication

WERUCON thread-forming lubrication

In thread forming, the thread is formed into the workpiece by pressing a tap with a specific profile into the material. In contrast, in thread cutting, the thread is produced by removing material with a thread cutter.

Depending on the dimensions of the punching and forming machines and thus the desired workpieces, WERUCON supplies the appropriate lubrication technology. In particular, very small threads, from about M0.8 (micro screws), require technically challenging solutions. With our dosing automation and spray heads, we start directly at the process (forming) and contribute to a trouble-free, repeatable process!

Examples of thread cutting and forming applications

In short: threads are everywhere. Thread cutting is therefore a widespread technique in the manufacturing industry, for which there are numerous machines and automation solutions. The challenges in this area are many and varied and, in the case of thread forming, relate to the size, number and fundamental nature of the planned end products.

These are used in numerous fields of application and industrial sectors. This is obvious in electrical engineering and vehicle construction. The automotive industry in particular relies on increasingly intricate and complex solutions, which is related to the switch to electric operation, for example. WERUCON accompanies all these developments in its own way by adapting and continuously improving the lubrication during production to meet the new requirements.

Practical examples from the economy

  • Electronic industry: Threads are used in electronic devices such as mobile phones, computers and cameras.
  • Automotive industry: Threads are used in engines, transmissions, chassis and body parts.
  • Mechanical engineering: Different machines, tools and systems require a variety of threads with ever new properties.
  • Aerospace industry: Aircraft, satellites and rockets use elaborate electrical engineering, and a wide variety of threads are fundamental to many components.
  • Medical technology: Threads are incorporated into medical devices, implants and instruments. In this area in particular, the trend has long been towards micro-stamped and formed parts.

In these industries, threads in the range of M0.8 to M12 are frequently used because they are suitable for smaller components and precise applications. Companies that specialise in the production of threads in this size range can offer customised solutions for their customers’ specific requirements.

Why is precise lubrication so important when forming and cutting threads?

The use of lubricants such as pastes or oils when thread forming and tapping is extremely important. Our customers machine various metals, primarily steel, stainless steel or non-ferrous metals, when cutting and forming threads. This means that high forces act on both the workpieces themselves and the machines:

  • punching and forming tools
  • punching and bending machines
  • transfer presses
  • other devices and automation systems for thread cutting and the like

WERUCON technology ensures a mist-free application of your lubricants. This reduces friction, for example on taps or thread cutters, which extends the service life of the machines. At the same time, lubricants help to improve the surface quality of the workpieces and ensure a smooth surface and improved sealing of the threads.

Moreover, the cooling function plays a crucial role. This is because heat is generated during thread forming and thread cutting, and this heat is dissipated by the lubrication. This prevents the tools and the workpiece from overheating. Furthermore, good lubrication helps to improve chip removal, resulting in cleaner and more precise threads.

WERUCON provides you with the necessary technology and remains flexible

The use of lubricants or oils contributes significantly to improving process stability, the quality of the threads produced and the efficiency of production. Therefore, proper lubrication is of great importance when tapping and thread cutting. WERUCON provides outstanding solutions here with its products for minimal quantity lubrication (MQL).

Our Duo-Spray Head (DSK7) has been specially developed for thread forming. It is used to supply the machines directly with the respective lubricant. The spray head can be supplied with lubricant either via one of our dosing solutions:

What do we do when space is very limited?

We see no problems, only solutions. If the space around the punching machine, etc. is very limited, we use our spray lance direct connection (SLDØ3,5). With its outer diameter of only 3.5 mm, we guide the lance from the outside to the respective application.
